Thinking about joining Holy Family’s Cub Scout Pack 3177
Pack 3177 has been around continuously since 1957! Holy family parish is our chartered organization.
Below is my attempt to compile some details and normal FAQ that people have asked me throughout my time in Pack 3177.
Enjoy

Here’s a link to a “what is cub scouting” Page, there is SO MUCH information online that it’s hard to know where to start
First, some definitions/ jargon that will help you.
Council – In the Akron and Youngstown area it’s the Great Trail Council, their office is on 4500 hudson drive, they are the main scouting organization. They own and operate camps Manatoc and butler, and Stanbaugh. And also support a TON of scouting groups.
District – We are members of The Crooked River District! Many districts make up a council area.
Den – 6-10 kids all from the same grade level, each grade level currently has one den, each year they are named after the rank they are working towards earning.
Pack- All of the den’s together are called a pack, we are Pack 3177
Registered leaders – Each den has leaders who are parents in that den, The leaders must apply, and get background checks through BSA’s national office, Additionally since we are sponsored by Holy Family Parish our leaders need to register with the diocese’s virtus program, and selection.com.
Class A uniform, also called the official field uniform.
For kindergarteners there is the official lion t-shirt,
For 1-4th there is the blue uniform shirt. (we do not require the blue pants for uniform. School inform pants or jeans are popular options amongst our scouts. The rule is no Sweatpants or athletic pants.
For grades 5 + and adults there is the brown shirt and green pants that you’ll recognize immediately as belonging to the BSA.
Class B t-shirts,
Any Scout themed shirts.. We tend to wear these when we may get extra messy at a meeting, or at camp outs, they’re a great way to show your scout pride, and highlight your scouting journey.
We have official Pack 3177 class B shirts for sale, we change the design from time to time, so any old or new pack shirt will work.
Also, Scout shop.com sells official BSA t-shirts. In recent years they have started putting out some really cute and fun designs.
Also, Any summer camp or district or council event usually has a t-shirt you receive. These are great because they identify where you’ve been on your scouting trail. It’s always cool to meet someone else wearing a day camp t-shirt from 2007!
In our normal years our schedule looks like this:
Two den meetings (each grade level) every month during the school year.
One pack meeting (all grades) a month during the school year. Any awards are presented, and we usually have a fun activity or program as well.
September – popcorn sales (our only fundraiser, profits are split between the pack and the scout. Scouts can spend money they earn from popcorn sales on uniforms or yearly registration fees.
October – Pack Fall campout, Weekend at Manatoc, Lots of fun! We usually do a shooting sport (archery or bb’s) plus creek walking, hiking trails, fishing etc.. It’s a lot of FUN.
November – a service project of some kind… we have helped with bulldog bags, the Akron canton food bank and made blessing bags for homeless in the past.
December – popcorn prizes awarded, and a Christmas party.
January – we try to do a fun pack outing, ice skating, sledding have all been done in the past.
February – Scouting anniversary month, we’ll do a scout Sunday at holy family church and also our big yearly blue and gold banquet (this is where we say good bye to our 5th graders, most of them change over to a troop (11-18 yr olds).
March – Pinewood derby, definitely one of the highlights of the year!
April – our spring camp out is usually in April or May each year.
May – Crossover Ceremony. All of our scouts rank advance to the next year, they receive a new neckerchief and any remaining awards for the year.
June – August. Time for our summer time events. We usually have a group of Scouts attending the campout sponsored by the akron rubber ducks, plus summer camps put on by the council or district, also our pack holds opti0onal get-togethers 2x a month throughout the summer.
